The marriage ceremony
With all the costs of getting married, it's good to know there's an affordable option that maintains the elegance of the occasion. A Registry Marriage is ideal for couples seeking a simple and intimate ceremony. The Registry provides the vows and the ceremony takes around 15 to 20 minutes. You can be confident we will look after all the legal requirements, from ceremony to certificate.
To apply for a Registry Marriage, please complete both of these forms:
Registry Marriag???e & Certificate application [Fillable PDF 440kb]?
Notice of intended marriage form [Fillable PDF 70kb]?

Lodge a Notice
To book a marriage interview please phone 13 77 88
At least one month before the ceremony, you need to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage.
Both the bride and groom must visit the Registry in person.
The Notice remains valid for up to 18 months.
If the couple are unsure of a date for their ceremony, this can be done later on.
To lodge a Notice in person
At Parramatta Registry, no appointment is required for a marriage interview. Please phone to arrange a time at our other locations.
To lodge a Notice by post
Please phone the Registry if you are unable to lodge your Notice in person. However, in order to confirm the arrangements, an interview in person will still be required as follows:
couples in Australia must attend an interview at least 10 working days before the ceremony,
couples overseas must attend an interview at least 5 working days before the ceremony.
At the interview
Both bride and groom must provide their original Birth Certificates or passport.
If you have been previously married, you must provide evidence of the termination of the marriage in the form of an original of your final divorce papers or a Death Certificate (if you have been widowed).
All documents provided to the Registry must include the originals, and if not in English then a qualified interpreter must have translated them.
The Marriage Ceremony date and time will be booked once all the documents have been provided.
The marriage ceremony
Arrive on time
It's essential the wedding party arrive 15 minutes before the appointed time for the ceremony and report to Reception. Note also that no confetti or rice is allowed. Consumption of alcohol on the Registry's premises is also prohibited. It is suggested the bride and groom and their guests observe a standard of dress appropriate to the occasion.
Wedding vows
The bride and groom sign declarations that they are over the age of 18 years, not legally married to someone else and are not directly related to each other.
They then exchange marriage vows, for example, do you take this man/woman to be your lawful husband/wife? They may also exchange wedding rings, if desired.
The Certificate of Marriage is signed by the bride, groom and 2 witnesses; and then presented to the husband and wife.
You will need two witnesses
The Registry does not supply witnesses. Bride and groom must arrange for two witnesses who can speak and understand English, and are at least 18 years of age, to be present. If there are interpreters present, they must be independent of the witnesses. Ensure two witnesses are arranged as the marriage cannot take place without them.
Arrange an interpreter if needed
The Registry does not supply interpreters. If either partner has difficulty speaking or understanding English, please ensure you have an interpreter present for the ceremony. If agreed at your initial interview that an interpreter is required, then the parties must arrange for this, otherwise the ceremony cannot take place.
